COUNCIL ADOPTS EU SINGLE WINDOW FOR CUSTOMS

On 24 October, the Council adopted the regulation setting up the single window environment for customs. The new rules aim to set the appropriate conditions for digital collaboration between customs and partner competent authorities.

The single window environment will allow customs and other authorities to automatically verify that the goods in question comply with EU requirements and that the necessary formalities have been completed. Once fully and properly implemented, the customs single window will allow businesses to submit documents to several authorities through one single access point.

CLECAT has been involved in the development of the EU customs single window since the very beginning and welcomes the progress in the adoption of the new rules. The single window is expected to make cross-border trade easier by reducing the administrative burden for economic operators, particularly by saving time and making clearance more efficient and automated.

The regulation can now be signed at the European Parliament’s November II plenary and then be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
