COMMISSION URGES MEMBER STATES TO TRANSPOSE NIS2 DIRECTIVE
Last week, the European Commission initiated infringement procedures against 23 Member States for failing to fully transpose the NIS2 Directive into national law by the 17 October 2024 deadline.
The directive aims to strengthen cybersecurity across the EU by addressing vulnerabilities in critical sectors, including electronic communications, energy, transport, digital services, and public administration. Member States receiving formal notices include Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Cyprus, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden.
The Commission has called these Member States to address the shortcomings within two months and to notify the measures taken to ensure compliance. If the responses are deemed inadequate, the Commission may escalate the process by issuing reasoned opinions.
