COM ALLOCATES OVER €600 MILLION FOR 70 ALTERNATIVE FUELS INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

On 17 November, the European Commission selected 70 projects across Europe to support the decarbonisation of transport by deploying infrastructure for recharging or refuelling various transport modes. These projects, financed through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will receive over €600 million, promoting sustainable investments in ports, airports, and along road sections of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

Among the projects, 24 ports across the EU will receive funding to install onshore power supply, green their operations, and develop ammonia bunkering infrastructure. These measures aim to accelerate the sector’s transition to renewable and low-carbon fuels, a key priority of the recent Sustainable Transport Investment Plan. The projects also include the construction of electric charging stations for heavy and light-duty vehicles, as well as other alternative fuel supply infrastructure. In addition, the TEN-T network of publicly accessible charging points will expand with over 500 new locations, including high-capacity megawatt chargers for trucks.

The Commission announced that, as the available funds have been fully allocated, the third funding round of AFIF will be cancelled. It will now assess potential reflows and prepare a new work programme and call for proposals in the coming months.
