CLECAT SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS INSTITUTE MEETS
On 19 November, members of the CLECAT Sustainable Logistics Institute met to exchange views on the latest developments regarding sustainability policies affecting transport and logistics at national and EU level. Members discussed the upcoming sustainability reporting requirements, the recent EU institutional changes and its consequences on the implementation of pending legislative files
Members formally approved the CLECAT Guide on ISO 14083, the international standard for quantifying GHG emissions in transport services. This new resource empowers freight forwarding companies to calculate and report emissions from their transport activities, contributing to greater transparency and sustainability across global supply chains. The guide is the English translation of the publication by the German Federal Environment Agency, which has been reviewed and updated by CLECAT to ensure its relevance and applicability for the broader European logistics sector.
An exchange took place on the implementation of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Members emphasised that beyond the future adoption of sector-specific standards (ESRS), including road transport and the general transport sector, it was crucial that the EU Commission, EFRAG and the transport community should come together to provide guidance and best practices on the applicability of sustainability standards. Members welcomed Commission President Von der Leyen’s commitment to reduce administrative burden, especially for SMEs. However, this commitment must now translate into concrete actions to prevent overburdening the logistics sector, especially SMEs, and to avoid duplication of reporting requirements.
Members were informed on the latest developments regarding the installation of the new College of Commissioners which will have an impact on the implementation of already agreed legislation (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Digital Product Passport), pending legislative files (CountEmissions EU, Weights & Dimensions…) but also on potential new EC initiatives (Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, Greening Corporate Fleets…).
Finally, members took note of the most recent initiatives related to the decarbonisation of heavy-duty vehicles, notably with the work overtook by the European Clean Trucking Alliance (ECTA), the advancement of the ZEFES project and the ongoing EC market readiness study on alternative fuel HDV uptake until 2030, all of which CLECAT takes active participation in. These initiatives are important and necessary to provide the transport sector with concrete plans and ideas to increase the uptake of low and zero-emission trucks across Europe.
