CLECAT SIGNS GLOBAL MOU FOR ZERO-EMISSION MEDIUM- AND HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLES

On 10 November, CLECAT joined the Global Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for zero-emission medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Launched in the framework of the COP26 in Glasgow, the MoU was signed by 15 countries (Austria, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Wales), as well as private stakeholders, including the European Clean Trucking Alliance (ECTA), of which CLECAT is a member.

Originating from CALSTART’s Drive to Zero campaign, the MoU sets an interim target of 30% zero-emission new medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sales by 2030 and signatories agreed to work towards a full transition to ZEV in new fleets by 2040. The transition to 100% zero-emission technologies for trucks and buses will require massive investments in battery and electric component manufacturing and charging infrastructure as well as cross-collaboration between countries and the public and private sector.

In parallel, the United Kingdom announced the COP26 declaration on zero-emission cars and vans, a landmark global agreement, which brings together national governments, states, regions, cities, vehicle manufacturers businesses, investors and civil society all committed to working towards 100% zero-emission car and van sales by 2035 in leading markets, and no later than 2040 globally. Via these coordinated agreements for road transport, cars, vans, trucks, and buses are all on a pathway to 100% zero-emissions and in line to meet the goals of the Paris agreement and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

CALSTART and the government of the Netherlands, as the organising bodies, will oversee the MoU implementation, track progress of countries adopting and implementing targets for the uptake of zero-emission HDVs, and continue to attract new countries and private sector endorsement in order to increase the global impact of the pledge.
