CLECAT PRESENTS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT

On 9 March, CLECAT spoke at the REIF Project (INTERREG Central Europe action for the increase of the modal share of rail freight transport) Transfer Conference, which aimed at setting the wider international scenario on the situation of Combined Transport in Europe, with specific focus on rail.

Shift to rail remains one of the main challenges to reach the Green Deal objectives, however, a modal shift towards rail has not occurred, with the share of freight transport remaining too low. To reverse this negative trend, significant action is required at regulatory level. The Conference discussed existing and future international policies and measures to accelerate the modal shift, as well the REIF project actions implemented. Furthermore, European and international associations representing industry players presented their perspectives on how to face these challenges.

As part of that conference, CLECAT was a speaker in the International Session, alongside the European Commission’s DG MOVE, and presented the state of the art of Combined Transport and the needs of the freight forwarding industry concerning policies, investments and regulation at EU level. In that regard, CLECAT focused particularly on the role of the Combined Transport Directive Revision as an opportunity to address the existing shortcomings and set the legislative preconditions to achieve the Union’s sustainability goals through a market-driven modal shift.
