CLECAT CALLS FOR A STRENGHTENED AFIR PROPOSAL

CLECAT has called on MEPs of the European Parliament’s TRAN Committee to strengthen the Commission proposal for a Regulation on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure (AFIR) by increasing the required power output for recharging stations dedicated to electric heavy-duty vehicles.

CLECAT has also called for the introduction of fleet-based targets for recharging infrastructure dedicated to HDVs to ensure that sufficient infrastructure is rolled out at pace with the market developments for zero-emission trucks. Referring to the provisions on LNG refuelling stations for HDVs (Article 8), CLECAT considers that it is essential that that bio-CNG and bio-LNG can be used at least as bridging technologies until zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles such as battery-electric or hydrogen fuel cell trucks are commercially available at scale for long-distance transport. Therefore, Member States should ensure that bio-LNG and bio-CNG refuelling stations for HDVs should be deployed along the TEN-T core network with a maximum distance of 400 km between them.

Finally, in the absence in the Commission proposal of any EU-wide mandatory targets for rail infrastructure CLECAT has suggested that EU railways must be either electrified or run by zero-emission locomotives only by the end of 2029.
