16 MILLION TONNES OF GRAIN SHIPPED FROM UKRAINE THROUGH THE BLACK SEA GRAIN INTIATIVE

In a recent report, the United Nations announced that more that 16 million tonnes of grain and other agricultural products have been shipped from Ukraine through the Black Sea Grain Initiative, since its launch on 1st August 2022.

For reference, the Initiative results from an agreement between the UN, Russia, Ukraine and Türkiye to enable resumption of agricultural exports, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its blockade of Ukrainian ports. From August 2022 to 1st January 2023, a total of 698 ships have been deployed on outbound voyages from Ukrainian ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhny carrying 16.3 million tonnes of grain from Ukraine.

Corn comprised the vast cargo majority of 45%, followed by 28% of wheat, while sunflower oil and grapeseed comprised 6 and 5%, respectively. 37 countries imported Ukrainian cargo, with China (3.1 million tonnes), Spain (3 million tonnes) and Türkiye (1.9 million tonnes) being the biggest importers of agricultural food. A share of the cargo is also processed and re-exported from these primary destinations to other countries.
