MEPS CALL FOR ACTION TO ADDRESS TRUCK QUEUES AT EU BORDERS

At the April Plenary Session European Parliament adopted a resolution on the handling of heavy goods vehicles at border crossing points. MEPs point out that various factors including insufficient technical capacity, staff shortages, and time-consuming checks on freight, hundreds of goods vehicles are held up every day at the EU’s internal borders, including the borders between Schengen and non-Schengen EU Member States, where vehicles face extremely long wait times and delays.

EC AWARDS €424 MILLION TO ALTERNATIVE FUEL INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

On 10 April, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) announced the results of the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) call, with 42 projects receiving more than €424 million of funding for the roll-out of alternative fuels supply infrastructure.

ITF PUBLISHES REPORT ON RESILIENCE OF TRANSPORT SYSTEM

On 11 April, the OECD’s International Transport Forum (ITF) issued a report on transport system resilience. Stemming from the discussions which took place at ITF’s roundtable on the topic on 14-15 September 2023, the report analyses the challenges of multiples crises affecting global transport supply chains and suggests recommendations to mitigate their consequences.

UNCERTAINTIES REMAIN AS EU FREIGHT INDUSTRY PREPARES FOR APRIL 30 LAUNCH OF UK BTOM SECOND PHASE

Traders and logistics service providers are preparing for the next phase of the UK's new Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), with physical checks on certain goods subject to veterinary and phytosanitary control (SPS goods) commencing from April 30. These checks will be conducted at specialized Border Control Points (BCPs). The UK Government is implementing a Common User Charge (CUC) to cover the costs of these controls.
