CLECAT POSITION ON CLEAN CORPORATE FLEETS INITIATIVE

CLECAT today released its position paper on the upcoming ‘Clean Corporate Fleet’ initiative, contributing its views on how to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission light- and heavy-duty vehicles in road logistics. Building on the public consultation in spring 2024 and the mission letter tasking Commissioner Tzitzikostas to propose legislation promoting clean corporate fleets, this initiative provides an important opportunity for the freight forwarding sector to help shape policies that support the decarbonisation of road transport.

DREWRY EXPECTS NO IMMEDIATE RETURN TO THE SUEZ CANAL

This week, shipping analyst Drewry noted that the return of ships through the Suez Canal following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was unlikely in the short to medium term. Despite the Houthis issuing a statement saying it will stop attacks on all non-Israeli-linked commercial shipping, Drewry estimates that carriers will not rush to the canal for geopolitical and economic reasons.

IMPACT OF 'EVER GIVEN' BLOCKAGE ON MAERSK: $89 MILLION LOSS

The 2021 blockage of the Suez Canal by the containership Ever Given left a lasting mark on global logistics, particularly for Danish shipping giant Maersk. According to a recent European study "The costs of maritime supply chain disruptions: The case of the Suez Canal blockage by the ‘Ever Given’ megaship led by the University of Gothenburg and the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, the incident cost Maersk nearly $89 million in delays and rerouted shipments.

PPWR PUBLISHED IN THE OFFICIAL JOURNAL

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 22 January. The new Regulation introduces new sustainability requirements for packaging, including on labelling, collection, treatment, and recycling of packaging waste.

UPCOMING REPORT ON SSTPAS

Earlier this week, the European Commission announced that a new report on the deployment of Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPAs) is expected in the first half of 2025. The report will include recommendations to strengthen and support the development of these facilities, with a focus on forecasting future needs.
