CLECAT AIR AND SECURITY INSTITUTES MEET

On 14 March, the Air Freight Institute of CLECAT met to discuss legislative and non-legislative developments relating to the EU Aviation Acquis, as well as aviation security, sustainability, and digitalisation. In the afternoon, CLECAT’s Supply Chain Security Institute met to discuss developments in the area of land transport, aviation, and cybersecurity.

EC ADOPTS NEW TEMPORARY CRISIS AND TRANSITION FRAMEWORK

Last week, the European Commission adopted a new Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework, which aims to support measures in key sectors for the transition to a net-zero economy. For reference, this Communication prolongs and amends the State Aid Temporary Crisis Framework which was first adopted in March 2022 following Russian’s invasion of Ukraine.

SHIPPING EU REGULATIONS COULD RAISE BUNKER COSTS BY 47%

Drewry’s Managing Director Philippe Damas published an article on LinkedIn analysing the expected costs of EU environmental regulations to decarbonise shipping, namely the inclusion of maritime emissions into the EU ETS, the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, and the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive.

TURKEY STOPS TRANSIT OF EU SANCTIONED GOODS TO RUSSIA AND BELARUS

Railfreight.com reported this week that Turkish customs authorities have put a sudden stop to the transit transport of sanctioned goods to Russia and Belarus. Cargo that is sanctioned by the EU can no longer be shipped through Turkey if the destination country is Russia or Belarus.

COMMON TRANSIT CONVENTION: NEW ARRANGEMENTS WITH UKRAINE

On 1 October 2022 Ukraine joined the Common Transit Convention - the international framework for the customs transit of goods that ensures simplified procedures between the EU and partner countries. The Convention mean that goods can move much more easily between the EU and the so-called Common Transit Countries

UCC WORK PROGRAMME PROGRESS REPORT 2022

On 16 and 17 March CLECAT joined the Electronic Customs Coordination Group (ECCG) held jointly with the Trade Contact Group (TCG). Various updates were received including updates on CBAM, ICS2 and UCC IT implementation.

SMART FREIGHT CENTRE PUBLISHES WHITE PAPER ON HOW TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES TO DEPLOY ELECTRIC TRUCKS

Smart Freight Centre, in collaboration with CALSTART and the Government of the Netherlands (RVO), published this week a paper on how to overcome challenges to ramp up the deployment of electric trucks. The paper is part of a series of discussions on financing the transition to electric trucks.

EU ENVIRONMENT MINISTERS DISCUSS CO2 STANDARDS FOR HDV

During the Environment Council which took place in Brussels on 16 March, EU ministers had the opportunity to provide preliminary comments to the Commission proposal revising the CO2 standards for new heavy-duty vehicles, which was presented last month.

ALTERNATIVE FUELS INFRASTRUCTURE: €189 MILLION IN EU FUNDING FOR PROJECTS SUPPORTING GREENER MOBILITY

The European Commission today announced 26 projects from 12 Member States selected for funding to install alternative fuels infrastructure along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). Between them, they will receive EU grants totalling roughly €189 million from the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), which combines grants from the Connecting Europe Facility with capital from financial institutions to increase the impact of investment.
