FIT FOR 55 PACKAGE – PAVING THE WAY FOR CO2 REDUCTIONS IN FREIGHT TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS

Over the last couple of months, the European Freight Forwarders Association (CLECAT) has reflected on the various initiatives set out in the European Commission’s Fit for 55 Package. The package is meant to pave the way to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990, accelerating the EU’s plan to fully decarbonise by 2050.

ETS: ROAD TRANSPORT REVENUES SHOULD BE RINGFENCED FOR ZERO-EMISSION TRUCKING

The European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT), the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) and the European Shippers’ Council (ESC) welcome the proposal to update the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and to create a new ETS system that covers buildings as well as the road transport sector.

TRAN COMMITTEE ADOPTS EUROVIGNETTE DEAL

Yesterday, MEPs from the Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Committee adopted the compromise on the reform of the Eurovignette Directive, with 30 votes in favour, 16 against and 3 abstentions. Several political groups such the EPP and the Greens/EFA introduced amendments to the text, but all were rejected.

On 11 January, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air cargo markets showing slower growth in November 2021. Supply chain disruptions and capacity constraints appear to have impacted demand, despite economic conditions remaining favourable for the sector.

ECTA POSITION PAPER ON CO2 STANDARDS FOR VANS

The European Clean Trucking Alliance (ECTA), of which CLECAT is a member, published yesterday a position paper calling on policymakers to raise the ambition of the revised CO2 standards for vans. The coalition notes that the current low uptake of zero-emissions vans can be explained by the current CO2 emission performance standards for vans which are not sufficiently ambitious to drive the market towards zero-emission vehicles.

On 13 January, the European Commission published the draft Delegated Act on Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPAs), in the remit of the Driving and Rest Times Regulation, for public review until 10 February.
