INCREASED DISPARITY AMONG SHIPPING’S INDEX PROVIDERS

The ever-increasing ocean freight rates have led to an unexpected consequence: According to Vespucci Maritime, the disparity of rates measured by the container index providers has widened, which can lead to difficulty and confusion to properly measure the correct price for a spot shipment.

FT BLOG ON SHIPPING DECARBONISATION AND COSTS

On 24 August, the Financial Times issued an opinion on how the push from the shipping industry to decarbonise their fleets could slow freight rates’ downturn in the long term. The column referred to the announcement by Maersk of a $1.4 billion investment in carbon-neutral ships, run on “green” methanol, produced by anaerobic digestion and other means.

DRIVER SHORTAGE IMPACTS ROAD FREIGHT MARKET

On 24 August, Transport Intelligence published a research paper on European driver shortages, which assesses the scale of the ongoing structural issues restricting the supply of drivers across Europe, with a total shortfall of drivers now surpassing 400,000. The most heavily impacted European countries are Poland (shortage of around 124,000 drivers), the UK (76,000 drivers) and Germany (45,000-60,000 drivers).

EC RAIL FREIGHT EVENT – EU YEAR OF RAIL

The European Commission, in cooperation with the Luxembourg Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, is organising a conference dedicated to rail freight on the 5th of October in Bettembourg, Luxembourg. The conference is part of the European Year of Rail and is one of the stops of the Connecting Europe Express train.

NEW RULES OF ORIGIN IN THE PEM AREA

On 25 August, the European Commission announced that as of 1 September 2021, new transitional rules of origin will become applicable within the pan-Euro-Mediterranean (PEM) area, between the EU and Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Albania, Jordan and Faeroe Islands.

EU DELAYS REQUIREMENT FOR NEW EXPORT HEALTH CERTIFICATES

On 10 August, the EU introduced amendments to its Animal Health Regulations and decided to delay the time from which traders must use the new Export Health Certificates (EHCs), due to be introduced from 21 August 2021 for goods exported to the EU. The extension is meant to assist third country traders in the transition to the use of the new certificates and prevent unnecessary disruption.
