ALTERNATIVE FUELS SECTOR CALLS FOR RETAINING TRANSPORT-SPECIFIC TARGETS IN THE RENEWABLE ENERGY DIRECTIVE (RED)
A preliminary version of the impact assessment accompanying the ongoing revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) raises uncertainty over whether transport-specific renewable energy targets will be maintained. In a letter to the European Commission, thirteen industry associations representing producers of liquid and gaseous biofuels, including bioethanol and biogas, stress the importance of retaining these targets.
The organisations point out that renewable energy accounted for only 11.2% of the EU transport sector’s energy consumption in 2024, well below the 29% target set for 2030 under the Directive. Beyond climate considerations, the signatories also emphasise the importance of transport-specific renewable energy targets for Europe's energy security and resilience.
